Tell us a bit about yourself

I have more than 25 years experience in advising Belgian and international companies on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and venture capital, not exclusively but often in the technology field, and much more. I also added ICT and privacy law early on in my career.

In my free time, I like to spend time with my wife and son. I'm hard to beat when it comes to sports trivia, and I'm a walking restaurant guide – to the great delight of my friends and clients.

Top of the class in ...

I invested in new media when nobody else was quite sure what to do with it. As a result, I now advise numerous Belgian and international ICT companies, including Microsoft. In 2012, 2014 and 2017 I was even chosen as ‘Global IT Lawyer of the Year'’ in the prestigious ‘Who's Who Legal Awards’.

A highlight

Probably setting up the first mobile network and the first e-commerce website in Belgium and acquiring the Flemish broadband cable operator. And, of course, providing assistance in numerous transactions to multinationals including Thomson Reuters, Sitel, Sorin, Shred-It, SunGard (now: FIS Global), Nobel Biocare, Q8, Ordina and Derendinger.

Good service is ...

In my opinion, it all starts with loving your job. Passion gives you the energy you need to succeed. There's quite a bit of hard work involved, of course. Also, a purely legal answer is never enough for us; we're always looking for solutions which are commercially practical. This entrepreneurial spirit is fairly unusual in our sector.

What are you proud of?

At the office, one of my clients was once quoted as saying: “I really don’t know when Steven sleeps. No matter what time of the day it is, he gets the job done.” I was particularly proud of that. My wife, not so much.
