United Kingdom nationals who exercised their right to reside in an EU member state in accordance with Union law before the end of the Brexit transition period can continue to reside there thereafter and vice versa. They are beneficiaries of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

According to the Brexit withdrawal agreement host states may require these citizens to apply for a new residence status which confers their right to stay as a beneficiary of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

Belgium has implemented such an application procedure. UK citizens who are beneficiaries of the Brexit withdrawal agreement and wish to retain this status must apply for an M card or an N card (for frontier workers) before the end of 2021.

After 31 December 2021 this application will only be possible if the applicant can prove that it was impossible to do so before the deadline.
